Smile

Here is a transcript of 2 interviews with Darren that have been on my local radio the past few days I tried posting it on the Sony board, but its a bit useless with the post size restrictions over there! There'll be another one on tonight, so I'll post that one tomorrow

Part 1:

BK: Here?s Darren Hayes, doing what he does best? talking shit with me.
D: And picking my nose.
BK: That?s its, he?s here. The album is called Spin, he?s about to start a world tour. Now you?re going to like 15 countries?
D: Yeah, you counted them before when I was talking.
BK: I cant believe your going to like, Scandinavia, the UK, Europe. America, are you going back there again?
D: Pfft?next year
BK: Oh yeah, you need a year for the states alone.
D: Well we?re releasing the 2nd single there soon actually, probably in about a month.
BK: So which ones that? I?ve missed one.
D: It?ll be ?I Miss You?. It?ll be a song you wont like because it?s a mushy girly love song.
BK: Ooh is it.. eerrr
D: (laughs)
BK: Wasn?t that the last one? Didn?t you have Insatiable and then IMY?
D: No, Insatiable was first, and IMY hasn?t been released anywhere yet.
BK: Ooh it?s the new one. They love ballads in the States don?t they?
D: They do, so do the Chinese.
BK: Really?
D: Yeah, we just came back from the Great Wall of China.
BK: Wow, did you get to sing on it, can you like do a gig from there?
D: Yeah, I think we?re gonna play there, but yeah, they love a good ballad.
BK: That?d be cool, coz you?ve got like the big stage
D: You?ve got the big stage
BK: (Laughing)
D: Imagine that! On the Great Wall
BK: And people can see, it?s the only man mad thing people can see from space..
D: Yeah I know.
BK: So they could see? ahh there he is!
D: Yeah, uh huh.
BK: If you get the bald spot happening? ooh I can see?
D: (laughing)
BK: Now look, the album, was it years in the making for you? Did it fall together? Was it something you wanted to do forever being with?
D: Yeah
BK: Yeah
D: Yeah, it is, its funny. Coz I look back on this record now and realize that it really does contain all the sorts of styles of music I?d always wanted to make for years and years, and they all came together on one record. I think my next album will be a little more focused.
BK: Uh huh
D: I think this record was just, I had to just do this. I love it, and I?m proud of it, but its definitely the sound of someone really just running free, I think.
BK: Just going, right I?m gonna do a bit of this and a bit of that, bit of this and everyone else piss off & I?ll do what I want.
D: yeah, and having fun.
BK: Did Daniel ring you up and say look, I love it? What was his reaction?
D: You know, we haven?t talked about my album per se. We talk, but uumm?
BK: I think you?ve gotta ring him and just say, look mate, you?ve had a listen, let me have it.
D: Well its weird, because I respect his opinion so much?
BK: Are you scared are ya? A bit scared he?s gonna??
D: Umm, probably.
BK: Yeah?
D: To be honest?
BK: Well you work so closely with someone and then you go?
D: He said something really beautiful about Insatiale, he said the first time he heard it he got chills, and that was a big big compliment, but its weird because we didn?t do it together, its almost like someone else reading your diary.
BK: Aahh
D: I?ve had such an amazing musical relationship with Daniel, that for him too?I don?t want to know what he thinks about my record.
BK: You?re worried.
D: But he?s gonna be there on tour anyway, he?s gonna see some of the shows.
BK: That?s it, so afterwards he?ll be able to say that was good?
D: Or that was crap. You idiot (laughing)
BK: Yeah that?s it.
D: You know (still laughing)
BK: Lets play the latest now, a bit of Crush. Check out his album Spin.

Part 2:

BK: Darren Hayes with us chatting away, talking more music, life and future wise for you. Are you going to continue to do the music thing after this world tour, or are you gonna have a year off?
D: (laughing.. I don?t know why though) No I am going to continue, its interesting, I think that the tour is great because all I?ve done I talk about this record for a year and a half
BK: You?re getting over it now, you?re just going, look here it is man, just listen to it will you?
D: Yeah, I just wanna do it.
BK: Yeah
D: So I am excited about playing it live, but yeah, I?m really, you know, I?ve got sore fingers at the moment because I?ve been trying to learn the guitar, and I think its really going to change the way I write songs
BK: Coz you?re gonna sit down and jam by yourself?
D: Yeah, so I think I want to go back into the studio early next year and just see what happens
BK: Maybe do a live? the.. the? ?Jammin Darren Hayes album? (both laugh)
D: yeah, I have to say though, I love this band at the moment. I?m thinking about, you know, I would love to record some of it and release it. We?ll see, I mean we?re going to record it anyway. We always do.
BK: Can you do a live tour album, like pick some really?
D: Yeah, you could. I mean, I think that you wanna do that sort of further down the line
BK: See how you go and?
D: But we?re going to record it. I?ve recorded most of our shows anyway, just for us.
BK: Now look, its been 7 years, its been a bit of a roller coaster ride. Give me like, what are a couple of the highlights, what are a couple of the big things where you just went ?yes, this is all working for me?
D: Ooh you know, the other day, I was shown a video of when we performed at this Pavarotti concert to be honest.
BK: Yeah
D: And I sang with him. I sang a duet with him
BK: Wow
D: I sang O Sole Mio, and yeah, I don?t own a Pavarotti record, but I tell you, that moment was pretty amazing.
BK: You were just going wow
D: Yeah, and the Olympic Games, performing at the Olympic Games.
BK: The Olympic Games we?re pretty big
D: Performing at the Olympic Games was so emotional. You know, if you didn?t think you were patriotic before, I challenge you to stand on a stage and perform, you know?
BK: for the Olympic Games, for the world?
D: Yeah, that was a pretty amazing moment.
BK: So how did you feel with Pavarotti? Pretty daunting, you?re going ?I?m not gonna try and take this bloke on with octaves??
D: That?s the thing!
BK: I know (both laugh)
D: And yet he selects all the people he wants to sing with, and you?re in a? you have one day rehearsals before the event. It?s in Italian, and he kept changing the key!
BK: You?re kidding
D: And he?d go ?Oh, you can do it high? because he was listening to my voice
BK: Oh, okay
D: And he just thought, oh you?ve got a large range, you can do this. He was cool, he was tough. But I got the bravo at the end
BK: Ooh that?s pretty good!
D: Which *nobody* else got!
BK: ooh
D: so that meant good.
BK: So you actually sang with him somewhere in Italy?
D: Yeah in Bologne (sp?)
BK: aah okay. So they knew who you were and everything, they were cool?
D: Yeah, he flew me over there, he loved it.
BK: Good stuff! Alright, we?re gonna play it now, a bit of Crush. Just quickly, whats it about?
D: Crush is really about having a Crush on the year 1983 and everything in it.

*gladly takes the 's from Chai*

And here is part 3 from last night

BK: Darren Hayes is about to start a world tour, and of course, you?re what?you start in Australia because you feel more at home here? Is that how it works?
D: Really, because of that and because I get a legitimate reason to hang out in Brisbane with my family.
BK: Aah Brisvegas. That must be such a culture shock from traveling the world.
D: Oh its beautiful, to be honest.
BK: Do people haunt you there at home, or do they leave you alone?
D: People are beautiful to me. Its amazing I?m here for like 3 or 4 months rehearsing?3 or 4 *weeks* sorry! I wish months! And ahh its just great to be around my friends and my family before this, sort of, truck moves on. Its 3 or 4 weeks of down time. Its hard work rehearsing for a show?
BK: Yeah
D: But then we?re gone for 6 months
BK: So is that where you?ve got to be creative every day? You?ve gotta go ?righto cmon?
D: Pretty much, and then its like you know, look I am a hard boss when it comes to my band, I really believe that when people come to see a how that they?ve paid good bucks
BK: Yeah, shit yeah.
D: And that they deserve their money and I give everything on stage, so yeah we rehearse every single day, 8 hours a day.
BK: Right, I?m gonna rattle off some dates (says a few of the Oz dates) You, after that, you head off over the world?
D: Other Australian cities, and then we go to the UK, go to?
BK: Hey yeah, where else, other than Australia, where else are you the hugest?
D: Uum, at the moment, the UK and ooh I don?t know, Latin America, Mexico, uum Asia
BK: Is that really weird, what do you just hang out there and drink Corona?s. I always have this image of?
D: Its scary! I gotta tell you, when I go to Mexico, that?s the only place in the world where I need security. Its scary.
BK: They?re that much into it?
D: Oh totally, yeah its amazing.
BK: Wow, so you got your body guards?
D: Well you don?t want them, but you need them, you would never leave the airport?
BK: Otherwise they?ll rip you to shreds you reckon?
D: Yeah, we had girls break through windows and hurt themselves and get taken to the hospital, just coz they?d slashed themselves up on?
BK: And you?re going ?who are you trying to get to see?!?
D: Well I just think ?What will you do if you get to me??!?
BK: Well they might carry you off and we?ll never get to hear from you again. There?ll be no more albums, no more anything.
D: But they dig the music, which is very cool.
BK: On this tour, are you gonna start writing? Do you always write?
D: aahh
BK: Is it just one of those things that you always do?
D: You know I never write when I?m on tour. Its weird, I think that I get everything I need musically on stage every night. I listen to a lot of records when I?m touring, and store up ideas and umm
BK: So when do you write? Do you have a writing couch, or a tree that you gotta be under?
D: Aah I go into a studio to be honest. I treat it like I do rehearsing for a show.
BK: Serious??
D: Yeah
BK: So you don?t get a creative idea? you go in there and go right, its like work?
D: Yeah, its like 6 hours a day, just go in and just go?
BK: ?right, lets work on this sucker?
D: Mmm
BK: So for a song, say like 1980?Crush 1980 Me, how long are we talking?
D: That was written over a period of 3 months, but really it was written in 3 minutes. I mean, I wrote it with this guy called Robert Conley and ahh basically, he just started playing some stuff and the whole song?we?ve got it on video camera actually. We were just jamming on day at his house, and the song was pretty much written in 3 minutes, and then I took 3 months to write the lyrics.
BK: So that?s how you do it? Music first?
D: Yeah, always?and melody and the lyrics is that last thing I do.
BK: Cool. Check him out live if you can. Get back to Australia soon Dazza
D: I will
B: Thanks for coming in
D: It?s a pleasure. Thank you.
